6 months before the trip

Choose the Right Visa

Define which visa you need according to your situation (work, study, investment, etc.) Each visa has specific requirements and it is key to make the right choice from the beginning. Don’t know which visa to apply for? You can take the test at the end.  See visa section

5 months before the trip

Request an appointment

To apply for a visa to Portugal, you must request an appointment in person at the Portuguese Embassy in your country of residence in order to submit your visa application. The appointment date should not be more than 90 days before your trip. Read our guide on how to apply for a visa for Portugal.

4 months before the trip

Gather your Documents

Make sure you meet the general and specific requirements of each visa, and start gathering the documentation one month before your appointment.

Get your insurance

All visas require travel assistance insurance with accident, emergency and funeral repatriation coverage. Get your insurance at the lowest price.

3 months before the trip

Apply for your Visa

Submit the requested turn at the Portuguese embassy or consulate in your country. The time it takes to obtain an approval response is usually between 30 and 90 days.

Get ready to travel

Was your visa approved? Check the start date of your visa, which usually matches the date you indicated on the documentation you submitted. From that date you can enter Portugal! Be sure to arrange all necessary documents, such as passport and travel insurance. It is advisable to arrange your NIF before your trip to facilitate your arrival.

Trip to Portugal
